TRUGLO Supports Collegiate Competitive Shooting
by Craig Lamb
The Texas A&M Corps of Cadets Marksmanship Unit is hitting the collegiate shooting sports world center mass.
Founded in 2012, CCMU is one of the fastest-growing collegiate sporting programs in the country. They compete throughout Texas and all over the United States in the Scholastic Pistol Program, Trap and Skeet, Three Gun and U.S. Practical Shooting formats.
TRUGLO — the world’s leading manufacturer of patented TFO (Tritium/Fiber-Optic) and fiber-optic shooting accessories — sponsors the CCMU as well as supporting several other youth and collegiate shooting organizations.
“TRUGLO’s sponsorship of the Texas A&M Corp of Cadets Shooting Team shows our company’s dedication to supporting the future of both our industry and our country at the same time,” said Lorraine Hellinghausen, V.P. of Marketing, TRUGLO, Inc. “These team members are all fine examples of good citizens, good students and good shooters. We are so honored to be associated with such an exemplary group of young men and women.”
The more recent growth of collegiate shooting sports is a direct result of several industry organizations’ participation and funding. The National Shooting Sports Foundation realized several years ago that parents and mentors could pass along the enjoyment and thrill of shooting at the competitive level for quite some time.
Rallying support from around the shooting industry, the NSSF formed the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) . This newly formed foundation created the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) as well as also helping to develop the Scholastic Pistol Program (SPP).
The SPP is an extension of the SSSF’s outreach to encourage good sportsmanship and inspire a competitive spirit through team handgun shooting competitions. The idea gels much like the SSSF’s highly successful Scholastic Clay Target Program aimed at kids from elementary grades through high school and college students as well.
That approach is working; the college ranks for the SSSF continue to grow. Last year, more than 4,000 college-level shooters participated in the SSSF’s programs. Those numbers will continue to grow as the popularity of programs designed to recruit younger shooters increases; last year alone, more than 2,000 high school students participated in the Foundation’s sporting clays championship event. Interest in that program continues the momentum at the collegiate level through programs such as SPP.
